Why start with Qwen Code CLI

Qwen Code gives developers a terminal based agent that handles code changes, explanations and refactors. The free route runs through Qwen OAuth and delivers a daily quota without any card details.

Results come from the Qwen3 Coder model. Users who work in the terminal or want an agent that edits files directly will see the most value. Those who prefer only GUI tools may find the setup extra steps they do not need.

Check what you need first

Node.js version 20 or higher must already sit on the machine. Run node --version in any terminal to confirm. If the number is lower, install the current LTS release from the official site before continuing.

A qwen.ai account is required for the free OAuth path. Sign up takes under a minute and works with existing email or social logins.

Install the package

Open a terminal window.
Run the global install command exactly as shown: npm install -g @qwen-code/qwen-code@latest
Wait for the process to finish. The command prints the installed version when complete.

Try a change next: add a hello world function to the main file. The agent proposes edits and asks for confirmation before writing to disk. Approve or edit the plan as needed.

Each interaction counts against the daily quota. Short prompts use fewer requests than long multi file refactors.

Handle the quota catch

The 2000 request daily allowance resets every 24 hours. Heavy users who run dozens of complex tasks can exhaust it before the day ends. The 60 requests per minute cap prevents burst overload but still allows steady work.

When the quota runs low the agent pauses or returns an error. At that point switch to a paid Alibaba Cloud plan or another free provider listed in open source agent docs. The CLI supports OpenAI compatible keys as a fallback.

Students or open source maintainers sometimes receive extra quotas through separate programs. Check the qwen.ai dashboard after login to see any current offers.

Extend the workflow

Install the VS Code extension if terminal only feels limiting. The same Qwen OAuth account works across the CLI and supported editors. Sessions stay synced so work started in one place continues in the other.

For teams the GitHub integration lets the agent respond to issues or review pull requests when mentioned by handle. This stays inside the same free quota.

Custom skills and MCP servers can be added later. Start with the defaults to keep the first afternoon simple.

Real limits and next steps

The free tier has no hidden time limit or repo restrictions. It does require an internet connection and the daily request count. Self hosting the open weight models removes the quota but moves the compute cost to local hardware.
