India Launches First Indigenous System on Module at SEMICON India 2026

Event draws global chip players to New Delhi

SEMICON India 2026 opened its doors on 17 September at Yashobhoomi in the capital. Nearly 12,000 visitors turned up on the first day alone. More than 600 exhibitors took part, with roughly 300 coming from abroad.

Japan, Singapore, South Korea and several European nations sent strong delegations. The organisers expect around 50,000 visitors over three days from 52 countries.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the gathering on the second day. He noted that global firms had shown willingness to raise investment once execution improved.

The event runs through 19 September. Sessions covered manufacturing, materials, packaging and workforce needs.

Twenty five new collaborations announced

On the second day officials unveiled 25 agreements spanning the full chip value chain. The deals cover high purity gases, wet chemicals, advanced packaging and power electronics components.

Tata Electronics signed with INOX Air Products for semiconductor grade gases. It also partnered Sumitomo Chemical for high purity wet chemicals and materials used in front end processes.

Kelington Engineering will supply gas distribution systems and high purity piping. Training for local teams forms part of that package.

Enomoto of Japan joined Tata for advanced packaging work and localisation of lead frame production. L and T Semiconductor Technologies will explore manufacturing at Tata facilities, starting with consumer camera modules.

Power electronics and renewable focus

L and T Semiconductor Technologies struck several partnerships aimed at power devices. Virtual Forest will co develop solutions for air conditioning and solar systems.

Newen Systems will work on Silicon Carbide modules for renewable energy and AI data centres. Fimer India joins for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors in renewable setups.

Capital Power Systems will develop IoT modules for smart meters, beginning with an indigenous 4G communication module. MeitY, the Ministry of Power and POWERGRID announced a pilot for Silicon Carbide modules at a 1,000 MW HVDC project in Bihar.

These moves target local production of components that currently rely heavily on imports.

First indigenous System on Module unveiled

IndieSemiC and C DAC launched the ISC VegaSOM during the event. The government described it as India first indigenous System on Module.

The module pairs C DAC VEGA Thejas32 processor with IndieSemiC LoRa RF module. Development happened under C DAC Industry Support Centre initiative.

Officials said the product shows Indian design firms moving from chips to complete end use products. No public pricing or detailed electrical specifications have been released yet.

Kaynes Semicon and IndieSemiC also announced an OSAT tie up for qualification, assembly and testing of QFN and BGA packages plus custom System in Package work.

Supply chain and logistics deals

The India Semiconductor Mission signed an MoU with Nippon Express Holdings for semiconductor logistics. The Japanese firm will bring expertise in warehousing, customs and specialised handling.

C MET Pune and Hindalco Industries agreed to scale critical raw materials for the semiconductor industry. These steps address earlier gaps in domestic material supply.

Vaishnaw stressed that Indian firms must compete on cost, quality, manufacturability and power consumption. Sustainability measures such as water recycling in fabs also received attention.

Skilling and design support

SEMI and the India Deep Tech Alliance will build the India Semiconductor Academy as an industry led skilling platform. Partners include Cadence, CG Semi, Dixon Technologies, Micron, Synopsys, 3D Glass Solutions, UC San Diego and IIT Kanpur.

NIELIT signed with Siemens EDA, Tata Electronics, Singapore Polytechnic International, IESA and SEMI University for design education and certification programmes.

NIELIT and SCL launched an indigenous 0.8 micron open source Process Design Kit on the NIELIT eChipHub platform. Silvaco and C DAC ChipIN Centre will give startups and MSMEs access to advanced TCAD tools under the Design Linked Incentive scheme.

The India Deep Tech Alliance reported 263 million dollars in investments across 56 Indian deep tech companies so far.
