Free Chrome extensions that cut daily work friction for Indians

Start with the blockers that actually save time
Most people install too many extensions and slow down their browser. The useful ones target the exact friction points that hit every day in an Indian office or home setup. Begin with an ad and tracker blocker that runs light.
uBlock Origin Lite works on Chrome and Edge without the heavier filtering of the full version. It blocks ads and common trackers by default. The extension stays under the MV3 rules that Google enforces in 2026.
Install it from the Chrome Web Store. Turn on the default lists and add any regional Indian news sites that still serve heavy ads. No account is required. The only real limit is that very new ad networks sometimes slip through until the lists update.
Pair it with LeechBlock NG if distraction sites eat your morning. Set schedules for sites like YouTube or news portals. The free version allows up to 30 block sets with time and day rules. It runs on Chromium browsers and Firefox.
Users who work late notice the difference most. The extension prevents the quick check that turns into thirty minutes. No paid upgrade exists for the core features.
Add a password manager that syncs everywhere
Reusing passwords remains the fastest way to lose accounts. Bitwarden offers unlimited storage and devices on the free plan. The company states this explicitly on its pricing page.
Create an account with an email and master password. Import existing passwords if you have them in a browser or CSV. The extension fills forms and generates strong passwords on the spot.
Two-factor login works on the free tier. The catch is that advanced sharing with teams or file attachments requires the paid plan. For a single user or family the free version covers daily needs.
Indian users report no extra delays on Jio or Airtel connections. The extension stores data encrypted on your devices and the company servers. Export your vault regularly as a backup step.
Bring dark mode and tab control without extra apps
Bright screens tire eyes during long reading sessions. Dark Reader applies a dark theme to almost any site. It works on Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers with simple brightness and contrast sliders.
Install and toggle it on for sites that lack their own dark mode. The extension adds a small performance hit on very complex pages but stays acceptable for most office work.
Tab management comes next. OneTab collapses open tabs into a single list that restores on demand. The free version has no usage caps and no account needed. It frees memory immediately.
People who keep dozens of research tabs open see the biggest gain. The extension does not save tabs across browser restarts by default, so combine it with session managers if that matters.
Fix writing on the fly with a light grammar tool
Grammarly free catches spelling and basic grammar in any text field. The extension highlights errors inline and suggests tone adjustments on the free tier.
Sign up with an email. The free plan shows the main corrections but locks plagiarism checks and advanced rewrites behind the paid subscription. Most daily emails and reports stay within the free limits.
LanguageTool offers a more privacy-focused alternative with support for multiple Indian languages on its free plan. It runs checks locally where possible. Limits appear only on very high daily volume.
Choose one. Running both at once creates conflicting suggestions and extra CPU use. Test on a few documents to see which matches your writing style.
Keep research sources and notes in one place
Zotero Connector pulls citations and PDFs directly from browser pages. It works with academic sites and news that allow it. The free desktop app stores everything locally or in the cloud with limits.
Install the extension, create a free Zotero account, and clip articles as you browse. The tool pulls metadata automatically for most sources.
The catch is that some paywalled journals still require manual entry. Storage on the free cloud plan sits at 300 MB. Larger libraries move to local storage or paid upgrades.
Students and researchers in India find this faster than copying links by hand. Combine it with the earlier tab manager so research does not sprawl across dozens of open pages.
Put the stack together and watch the limits
Install in this order: uBlock Origin Lite, Bitwarden, Dark Reader, OneTab, Grammarly or LanguageTool, then Zotero Connector. Five or six extensions keep memory use reasonable on average laptops.
Test the setup on a normal workday. Adjust schedules in LeechBlock NG if certain sites still pull attention. Export passwords and notes monthly as a safety habit.
Free tiers work because they limit advanced features rather than core use. Grammarly drops full rewrites. Bitwarden drops team sharing. OneTab does not auto-save across crashes.
The real test comes after two weeks. If the extensions slow the browser, remove one at a time until performance returns. Most Indian users on mid-range hardware run this stack without issues.

If you got here because you are actually thinking about having it built properly once, instead of stitching six free tiers together and maintaining them forever, that is the work I do. I build for founders and small teams who want the thing to exist and work, not a deck about it.
