Delhi Satya Niketan building collapse claims seven lives

Delhi building collapse leaves seven dead

A five-storey building in Satya Niketan, New Delhi, collapsed on September 7, 2026. The death toll reached seven, according to The Hindu and Mathrubhumi reports. Rescue teams worked more than 27 hours before operations ended on Monday evening. Five people suffered injuries and received treatment in hospitals.

The building served as a boys' hostel for students. Twelve individuals were pulled from the debris in total. Delhi Police confirmed the final count on Monday.

Arrests and suspensions follow

Police arrested the building owner, his wife and son. The arrests took place after the owner was located in Rajasthan, The Week reported. Five Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials faced suspension. The Delhi High Court ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of evading accountability. Congress described the Delhi administration as a killing machine in statements about the tragedy.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a magisterial probe and a new committee to review paying guest norms. The panel will also examine structural audits for older hostel buildings.
