While the Taos Hum is described as a very specific, low-frequency hum, and many hearers report feeling it physically as well as hearing it, the comparison is often drawn. Skeptical viewpoints suggest that a combination of environmental background noise, heightened auditory sensitivity in certain individuals, and even mass psychogenic illness could contribute to the phenomenon. The fact that only a small percentage of the population (estimates range from 1 in 25 to 2 percent) seems to perceive the hum globally lends some credence to theories involving individual physiological or neurological factors.

Again, despite efforts, no definitive external source was found. This widespread nature of the 'Global Hum' suggests that whatever its cause, it is not an isolated incident specific to the unique geology or culture of New Mexico.
Scientists continue to investigate. Some theories now focus on very low-frequency seismic activity, global atmospheric phenomena, or even as yet undiscovered electromagnetic interactions. The challenge remains that the sound is often just below the threshold of human hearing for most, or at a frequency that is difficult for conventional audio equipment to isolate from background noise. Perhaps our current instrumentation is simply not sensitive enough, or tuned to the right parameters, to capture the subtle reality of the hum.
So, what is the Taos Hum? Is it a geological anomaly, an overlooked industrial emission, a rare auditory phenomenon originating within the human body, or something entirely different that science has yet to grasp? The people of Taos, and others around the world, continue to listen, waiting for an answer to the sound that only some can hear.
