A factory city with a library at its heart

Every living thing is made of cells — and a single cell is a whole bustling city. It has a wall, a town hall, power stations, factories, a postal service and a recycling plant, all cooperating to keep itself alive. Tap any part of the model to meet it.

The membrane — the wall

A living skin just two molecules thick surrounds the cell, deciding what comes in and what goes out. A wall with intelligent gates.

The nucleus — the library

The control centre. It holds the DNA — the complete instruction manual — and hands out copies without ever letting the originals leave the building.

Mitochondria — the power stations

These burn your food with oxygen to make energy (ATP). Astonishingly, they were once free-living bacteria that moved in billions of years ago and never left.

The rest of the crew

Ribosomes build proteins, the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi package and ship them, lysosomes recycle the waste. A city that runs itself, endlessly.

The cell is the smallest unit of "alive"

All life is cells

From a single bacterium to a blue whale, everything alive is either one cell or many working together. The cell is the boundary between chemistry and life — where molecules start to live.

You are a colony

Your body is a cooperative of about 37 trillion cells, each a living thing in its own right, specialised into skin, nerve, muscle and bone — all descended from one fertilised egg.

It reads the DNA

The genetic code means nothing without a cell to run it. The cell is the machine that reads DNA and turns those letters into a living, breathing body.

It renews you

Millions of your cells die and are replaced every second. You are, physically, almost never the same collection of cells you were a few years ago — a body constantly rebuilding itself.

Deham devālayam — the body as a living temple

Long before microscopes, Indian thought held that life pervades even the smallest thing, and that the body is a sacred, layered structure. Offered here as philosophy and reverence, beside the biology.

The body as temple

Deho devālayaḥ proktaḥ — "the body is called a temple," and the living spark (jīva) its indwelling deity. To see that a single cell is itself a complete, self-sustaining living world gives that old image a startling literal echo: countless small temples within the great one.

Jīva — life in the smallest

Jaina and Vedic thought held that life-monads (jīva) dwell in every living being, down to the tiniest — the root of ahiṃsā, reverence for all life. Biology's discovery that life is built of countless living cells, each striving to survive, is a curious meeting of that intuition.

The Pañca Kośa — sheaths within sheaths

The Taittirīya Upaniṣad describes the self as wrapped in five kośas (sheaths) — food, breath, mind, wisdom, bliss — each nested inside the last. A being made of layers within layers, membranes within membranes: a contemplative rhyme with the cell's own nested compartments.

"देहो देवालयः प्रोक्तो जीवो देवः सनातनः" Deho devālayaḥ prokto jīvo devaḥ sanātanaḥ — "the body is called a temple; the living self, the eternal deity within it."

In good faith: jīva, kośa and "the body as temple" are philosophical and spiritual ideas — a map of the self and of reverence for life — not statements about organelles and membranes, which were revealed by the microscope from Hooke onward. That a tradition sensed life reaching down into the smallest scale, and honoured the body as sacred and layered, is a beautiful convergence — offered as reverence beside the science, not as a claim that one is the other.

The cell was invisible for all of human history until a lens finally revealed it — and even then, no one guessed at first that all life is made of them.

1665 · London

Hooke names the "cell"

Peering at a sliver of cork through his microscope, Robert Hooke sees tiny empty boxes and names them cells, after the small rooms of monks. He is looking at dead plant walls — but the word sticks forever.

1674 · Delft

Leeuwenhoek sees the living

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, grinding his own tiny lenses, becomes the first to see living cells — swimming "animalcules" in pond water, bacteria, blood cells. A hidden living world, everywhere.

1839 · Germany

The Cell Theory

Schleiden and Schwann propose that all living things are made of cells — plants and animals alike. Life has a universal building block at last.

1855 · Berlin

Every cell from a cell

Rudolf Virchow declares "omnis cellula e cellula" — every cell arises from a pre-existing cell. Life comes only from life; the idea of spontaneous generation is finished.

1967 · USA

Margulis and the bacteria within

Lynn Margulis argues, against fierce resistance, that mitochondria and chloroplasts were once free-living bacteria swallowed whole — endosymbiosis. Now proven, it means every complex cell is a partnership of ancient lives.
